Vocation and Avocation

We are at the end of the semester which means things get difficult for me. I know, cry you a river, right? Bear with me. I need to whine just a little then I will be OK. At least the end is near. I can see the finish line.

But didn't you have a week off for Thanksgiving?

Sort of. We are never really off anymore. Not totally. I am already announcing to my class that after next Tuesday I am going into the Witness Protection Program. I always tell them that. I always tell my bosses that. But they still find a reason to track me down and make me do something.

Monday, I shuffled short and swam long. Sort of. I did a mere 3.07 miles of roadwork. Then at the pool I swam

1,500 30:54
brick kick on the hard side
600 12:02
6 X 50 build
400 25/25 free/back 8:32
total: 2,800

I think I can call that mild training. The shoulder is still not 100%. Maybe it will never be. I am trying not to hurt it anymore. I need to be ramping up for the Senior Olympics, both state and nationals, not to mention the Heart O' Dixie Triathlon. I qualified for six events at nationals, but I will probably only do one, the 500 free.

At the gym, I bench pressed

  18 X 50
  10 X 72
  6 X 105
  3 X 130
  4 X 140
  4 X 140
  3 X 140
  3 X 140
  close grip incline
  12 X 100
  10 X 100

On the seated dip, I did 23 X 92.5.

So there, I did all three workouts. Not bad for a hectic day back at work. Thank you Lord for my vocation as well as my avocation. I enjoy both and they give me purpose in life and fun too.

Dream of Mom

Mom left this world in October of 2017. Dad passed in November of 2013. While I have had several dreams about my dad, until last night, I had never had a dream-- that I can remember-- about Mom.

I was driving that old 1971 GMC pickup truck that was my main mode of transportation for 13 years. A young Forrest, he looked about 12 or 13, was with me. We pulled up into the driveway at Anna Lott's house across the street, who even in my dream had already passed. Then I thought better of it and backed out and parked in front of Mom's who also had departed this world.

We got out to start to the house and immediately I noticed that mail was strewn across the front stoop. This confused me because I knew Mom should not have been receiving any mail, and why was it scattered on the front porch?

The wood door was open and I opened the safety door and went inside. Once inside I thought how it felt like Mom should have been there. No lights were on but I could see. I went into the kitchen. She was there. In a relined position, she was in the doorway between the dining room and the kitchen. I walked over and touched her shoulder. She looked up at me. She had never looked prettier than she did then, and I saw her face more clearly than I ever have in my memory. A redbird was on the counter by the sink. I began to weep and wondered why Forrest did not come into the room.

Then I woke up.

BBU 3

I had a pretty good week off, but not the banner week of training I had planned. Sometimes you have to listen to your body and back off despite what you want to do. I am just now, at my advanced age, beginning to really practice that. I have known it for decades. I have believed it for years. But I had not the discipline to put it into practice until now.

Monday I ran short, 3.1 miles, and swam long, 2,285 meters. OK, you'e right. That is not long, but I liked the way it sounded in my mind so I wrote it in here so you could hear it too. (See what I did there?) Also, I worked in the gym while Simon worked on it. (See what I did there?) It was a nice start to a nice week.

Tuesday, I did my long[ish] run of the week with 9.41 miles of roadwork. I swam 2,422 meters and once again lifted long.

Wednesday I cut the shuffle to 2.73 anticipating a long run to Hillbilly Heaven on Thanksgiving Day. I swam 2,467 meters and did a truncated leg workout at the gym.

Thanksgiving Day brought rain, cold temperatures, and a sore patellar tendon. The rain helped me to exercise some restraint and not attempt the long run to Carroll County. I swam first thing (1,142 meters) and lifted at the gym. Between sets on the bench press, I did some easy shuffling on the treadmill. Like most runners, I do not like running on the "dreadmill," but I enjoyed the mix of running and lifting while going easy on the knee.

Friday was our annual Black Friday trip to Jackson. I got to spend the day with my wife, daughter, and granddaughter. I jogged 1.08 miles in one of the parking lots for my only exercise of the day.

Saturday I went a short 2.11 on the road and worked the legs hard at the gym. Sunday, we had an eating at church. I put down six pieces of fried chicken. Yeah, I'm good like that. After dark, I shuffled 1.44 miles.

For the week, I

ran 21.08 miles,
swam 8,316 meters, and
lifted weights five times.

Not bad. Plus I had some time off, and the gym has me feeling like a kid counting down the days until Christmas. Thank you, Jesus.

A Good Week Off

Friday and Saturday were like a taper only I wasn't tapering. Friday is our annual go-to-Jackson-Black-Friday trip. I drive my wife, daughter, and granddaughter to the big town, to all their stores, and to Berry's for supper. Berry's is a huge seafood restaurant in Florence. If you have never been, take a day and drive down. It is worth the drive if you don't do anything else but eat there. You'll recognize it by it being the huge eighty foot tall barn looking building on the east side of Highway 49. It also has one of those huge crosses on the lot. They have everything seafood on the all-you-can-eat buffet. It is good, yeah.

I did take a short shuffle in one of the parking lots while the ladies shopped. I went 1.08 miles to keep the streak going at 54 days. That was all the training I did that day. Hey, that's better than a poke in the eye. The day before, I had planned to get up early Friday and go to the pool. Didn't happen. I'm lazy like that.

Saturday, I ran to Forrest's for our second Thanksgiving meal of the week. I went 2.11 miles to keep the streak alive. Not only did I run, but at the gym I worked the pull and the legs. Simon showed up and made some progress on the gym. Plate City, which is already the best gym in town, is going to be the bomb when it is finished. Maybe it will never be finished. Not this latest project, but I mean there will most likely always be room for some sort of improvement. The idea of being through is not appealing to me. I like to dream, the change, to improve, to add, to dream some more.

Well, it was a good week off work even though I did not accomplish all of my goals. Thank you, Jesus, for good health, a good family, and a good week off.

Three on Thanksgiving Day

Yeah, I did some major training on turkey day, but not nearly as much as I had originally planned. First, I went to the pool while fretting over a slightly sore patellar tendon in my left knee. Not only that, but there was the weather. Rain. Rain. And more rain. I am not a fan of getting wet and cold on a run. Often I run from the house to Hillbilly Heaven on holidays. Would I be able to pull it off with a sore leg and a monsoon rain, not to mention the cold?

The pool was first in the lineup. I did a short, straight swim of 1,250 yards. Then back home, I had a light breakfast and decided to go to Plate City. While I had swum, I felt the knee on every push off from the wall. That plus the rain convinced me that to attempt a run to Hillbilly Heaven would be unwise.

At the gym, I did benches but with a twist. For maybe the third time since Plate City moved (eighteen months ago), I cranked up the dreadmill and shuffled between sets. Yeah, I kept the streak alive, (now at 53 days) with a total of 1.15 miles done in little .2 of a mile segments between sets on the bench press. It was new. It was different. It was fun. There, I said it. I enjoyed running on the treadmill.

So I did three workouts, short but real ones, on Thanksgiving Day. And I did a run on a treadmill and did not hate it. Hallelujah. Signs and wonder. They are still happening in our world. Thank you Jesus.

Two in a Row

Being off work (sort of), I was able to get in my three workouts two days in a row. Yee ha. First, I went out for a long(ish) run Tuesday morning. After 9.41 miles, I stopped at the house for lunch.

Lounging and digesting took a couple of hours before I showed up at the pool for

  700 13:42
  400 7:36
  brick kick
  350 6:50
  brick kick
350 6:50 (How is that for consistency?)
  8 X 25 build
  50 25/25 breast/free 1:01
  450 25/25 free/back 10:06
  150 easy 3:.01
  total: 2,650 yards

Is that training? Well, it is moving that way. On the builds, however, I never hit 100%. I never even hit 90%. Maybe I hit 80%.

Back home, I went to Plate City with joy. It was pull night so I did the chest-supported row, and corator tuff exercises.

A good day, yeah. Thank you Jesus.

Off? Not on Your Life

I am supposed to be off this week, but the administration at work has been lying awake at night figuring ways to make us work all the time. I just finished an hour or so of work, and have people waiting on me to do stuff. So much for being off.

Monday, besides working on my day off, I took my truck to the shop, left it there, and walked home. Then after lunch, I went to Plate City for some pushing. On the bench I pressed

  17 X 50
  10 X 72
  6 X 105
  3 X 130
  3 X 140
  3 X 140
  3 X 140
  3 X 140

The I did two sets of close grip incline bench presses with 100 pounds. Added to that was some seated dips and corator tuff stuff. Then it was off to the pool.

At the pool, my shoulder felt better than ever. I swam a straight 2,500 yards. The pace, however, was mediocre at 2:00 per 100. Still, not a bad start for what I hope will be a banner week.

On the road, I shuffled 3.16 miles. I have been hoping to run to Hillbilly Heaven Thanksgiving Day, but the weather forecast is not looking favorable right now with rain and cold weather predicted. Plus, Friday will be difficult to get anything more than a mile or two of shuffling in a parking lot. That is the day I chauffer my girls to and around Jackson. I love this day and look forward to it with eagerness.

So to make a short story long, I did three workouts and other stuff.

BBU 2

Big Build Up 2 was a strong week. It started Monday with a 7.09 mile run. Over 60s knocked out my swim, but not before I lifted weights. Tuesday was also good. While I only shuffled 2.04 miles, I swam 2,200 yards, and lifted more weights.

Wednesday continued the training with 4.33 miles of roadwork and 2,250 yards in the pool. At the gym I was not remiss doing deadlifts and loads over yoke (LOY) for a few reps. I hit a new PR on the trap bar deadlift with 230 pounds. Not bad for a skinny old man who is an endurance athlete not a strength one. The LOY is a full-body strength and conditioning exercise where I pick up a fifty-pound slam ball and load it over the top bar on my yoke. After a few reps, the muscles work, the heart beats hard, and the lungs scream for more air.

Thursday I hit the road for a short 2.11  miles and the gym for a big push day. Friday I did endurance day with 2,400 in the pool and 17 miles or road work. The road work broke down into 13.02 miles of running and 4.0 miles of walking.

Saturday I shuffled 2.82 miles and did leg work at Plate City. The Sabbath consisted of preaching, having lunch with my bride, taking a nap with the cats, and doing a short run at dusk. The short run was 1.66 miles long and marked the 49th day of my streak.

For the week, I

swam 6,259 meters,
lifted weights six times, and
ran 33.09 miles.

With the exception of the swimming being a bit light, that was one good week. Anytime I hit 30 miles on the road, I count as a big run week. I also hit all six gym days. Now I hope to top those numbers this week. Lord willing. Thank you, Jesus, for good health and fun goals.

More Plate City

Big things are happening at Plate City. OK, although the video is a bit cryptic, I will go ahead and spill the beans. I am having a wall installed.

Huh, a wall?

Yeah, just one.

Why?

Why what, a wall or one wall?

Both.

I'll answer. A wall because one) I can. Two) I need it. First, I am plan to install a big TV on the wall so I can watch the games on Saturday. Right now, I work out on Saturdays, and I am in constant tension when I do. What is happening in the game? Plus it will make it easier to do trainer work on my bicycle. Sitting an a bicycle in one spot and pedaling for an hour can be is a bit boring. Second, I need to hang some of the bars that currently cover the floor and make working out in the dark out there a bit hazardous. And third, I plan to bolt in some plate holders and do away with one or two or three of my plate trees thus creating more room and more safety.

OK, I get it. But why just one wall?

First, this one wall is going to hit my fishing bait fund up pretty hard so I can only do one. Second, I like the open air. I like working out at night and seeing the moon shine between the branches of the huge oaks that populate our neighbors' yards. I would never want it completely closed in. Now that I am in the process, however, I can foresee the time that I will do the opposite wall and have two walls closed in with both ends open.

Wow. I see. When can I come over and work out?

Let me check the football schedules today, and I'll get back with you.

New Project

It was warm enough Wednesday for me to run to at from the pool. Yeah, I am energetic like that. First, after work, I met Simon and Home Front to buy some materials for the latest project. What's that you ask? The gym, Plate City. I have a major project started at Greenwood's best gym. It's about to get better. Videos will follow on EndangeredSwimmer on YouTube. I might put one or two of them here in the blog.

After Home Front, I changed clothes and ran shuffled 2.03 miles to Twin Rivers. There I swam

  2,200 44:22
brick kick in the hard lane
  50 easy
  total: 2,250 yards.

Going home, I shuffled 2.3 miles. Then it was time for the gym.

Right now, with me trying to build my running mileage, my leg work has been attenuated a bit. On Wednesday, I do deadlifts, which works the legs some, but not like squatting, which I usually do on Saturday. I warmed up with a set of 3 X 135 on the normal deadlift before switching to the trap bar deadlift which I pulled for

  1 X 170
  1 X 200
  1 X 210
  1 X 220
  1 X 230 a PR

I am slowly working my trap bar deadlift up to I hope at least 250 pounds. That is in preparation for the BBU I told you about yesterday Monday. The idea is that the strength will augment my endurance and also make my bones better so that maybe I will not acquire a stress fracture doing the crazy stuff I have dreamed up.

Right now, I am sitting in class typing this. Yee ha. After my night class, I am off for ten days. Crazy training, here I come.

First Two Days

The BBU is going well this week other than having to miss a swim Monday. Why? Is it a senior moment that I can't remember? I did run, 7.09 miles and lift. Oh, now I remember. We had Over 60s Monday night, so we had to leave the house by 5:30. I did well and was light Tuesday morning despite the fact that the world famous Larry cooked the fish.

Tuesday I made it to the pool where I saw Tom Flanagan for the first time in a long time, maybe a year. He is rehabbing a knee, torn patellar tendon. Ouch!. I swam

2,150 42:45
brick kick
50 easy
total: 2,200

I shuffled 2.04 miles and lifted weights. I included my new LOY exercise and some tire jumps. What is the LOY? I have a recently purchased slam ball that I Load Over my Yoke. It is a full-body exercise that really gets the heart rate going. Yee ha!!

Thank you, Jesus, for a good two days.

BBU 1

I'm changing the name of my weekly review from HOD (Heart O' Dixie) to BBU (Big Build Up). Or maybe I will pick another name. The point is, I am in training for a big event over a year into the future. I don't want to reveal it to the world yet. I have talked with my wife about it. I also told Katie Jones because I commissioned her daughter, eight year old Reese, to do some artwork for the T-shirt. Why am I so hesitant about revealing my plans? I really don't know. I still have not revealed my 2022 plans for my Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi fundraiser. The BBU will also be the DFM thing for 2023. It's big. It's crazy. It's inZane.

Monday I ran 6.51 miles, swam 2,300 yards, and lifted weights. That is BBU training right there. Tuesday I shuffled 1.51 miles, swam 1,450 yards, and lifted more weights.

Wednesday I did the three-mile thing with BK, swam 2,400 yards, and did some mild weight training. Thursday, I began my taper for the Batesville race with 1.81 miles or roadwork, nothing in the pool, and some small gym work.

Friday, I did not lift, but I swam 2,450 yards and tipped around on the road for 1.31 miles. And Saturday was the big day. Forrest and I went to Batesville and ran the ten miler so I got a really good workout shuffling along at sub-training pace. Back home, I worked legs and pulls at Plate City. Sunday, I rest and I only tipped around in the dark for 1.55 miles.

For the week, I swam 7,859 meters, ran 26.42 miles, and lifted weights five times. I am on track for the BBU, the big event that is still sixteen months in the future. Yes, if you did the math, the 2023 event is presently scheduled for March, Spring Break.

I am as excited right now as I have ever been about my training. That is a gift of God that makes each day a joy. Thank you Jesus.

Finishing the Gateway to the Delta Ten Miler

Forrest and I were on the road by 5:45. It was cold and since the heater was not working in my truck, the trip to Batesville was like going across country in a covered wagon. But we did it and parked the cold truck and went inside a building for packet pickup. There we stood around and absorbed some of the heat. My feet were numb, and I knew I could not stand around outside.

We thought Katie Jones would come in and we could ask her to let us warm in her truck, but we waited and waited and finally I sent her a text. She was already warming and I told her our story and she let us get in the truck with her. Thank you Jesus.

The race nice. I like that one. BK told me that it is also one of her favorites. Basically, it is delta flat for 3.5 miles, hilly for 4.1 miles, and flat again for a few miles at the end. My goal was to shuffle a sub 11:00 minute per mile pace. I was on track for a bit. Starting too fast, I purposefully slowed and help a 10:45 for a while. When we started going up, however, so did the numbers on my watch.

At 4.05 I hit 11:00 even. Slowly the pace kept changing. I went from Hoping for a sub 11:00 to shooting for an 11:30. Then I was trying to hold on for a sub 12:00 which I did get. I finished, according to my watch with an 11:44. My official time was at an 11:50 pace and fourth out of three in my age group. You don't believe it? Here is the proof.

That's talent right there. And hard work. I have been training really hard for a long time and it paid off with a new low.

Forrest ran well, and it looks like I have passed the torch to him. BK also ran well finishing in a really quick 1:30 for second in her age group. Here is our mandatory selfie at the start.

So what is my assessment of the whole thing? It was a good workout for me. I ran ten miles at a pace I can never hold alone. Later in the day I watched Mississippi State's great comeback against Auburn. Then I went to Plate City and did some needed leg work. I did cut the volume a little since I had already run ten miles. In short, it was a good experience. I'm glad we went, and I hope we go again.

Only Two

Wednesday I was down to two. Since we had the Greenwood Mentoring Group Appreciation Dinner at six, I had to cut something short. I swam and ran, but did not lift. The dinner was nice. We met at 103 East Market, which was a nice set up. Penny and I took our plates to what I thought was a back room and sat down. For some reason, I looked up and only then realized that we were outdoors, on an enclosed patio. (Jack?) Johnson sat with us, and I had a nice chat with him.

In the pool, I kept it simple. I did a straight 2,400 yard swim. Believe it or not, that is my biggest one in a while, weeks, maybe a month or two. My shoulder felt real nice, which is I hope a harbinger of things to come. I miss training. No, I am not training in the water now. I am swimming a little, but not training.

Behind every fat man is an enabling,
snarling woman.

But I ran, however, before I swam. I met BK at the linear park, and we did that three-mile thing. I was slower than the last time we did this, having gained a pound of weight and run 6.51 miles Monday. I asked her afterwards-- huffing and puffing-- not to let me have anymore candy. She keeps candy in her office, and I stop by a few times per day for a handful at a time. It is time for me to get serious about the weight. It's not just a performance thing. It's not just an aesthetic thing. It's a health thing. I know I don't look much overweight, but I am not designed by God to carry much weight, and with my genetics, I must take care of myself.

God help me to have the will to push the plate back and dropped a few pounds.

Double Triple

I have a double triple going for the week. Monday I went to the pool and eased up and down the lane for 2,300 yards. Then I went to the gym and benched

  13 X 50
  8 X 72
  5 X 105
  3 X 130
  3 X 140
  3 X 140
  2 X 140
  2 X 140

In addition, I did my corator tuff stuff and some seated dips for 25 repetitions at 90 pounds. After all of that, I went out in the dark-- I love running this time of year-- and shuffled for 6.51 miles.

Tuesday I was back on the attack. At the pool, I went short going 1,450 yards. At the gym it was pull night on the chest-supported row machine. Then I went out for a short tipper of 1.51 miles.

Today will be a challenge. Penny and I have an event tonight that might make it difficult to get the three, but I will make an honest effort. Thank you Jesus.

HOD 15

I had a step down week in terms of running volume while maintaining enough miles to keep me moving up the endurance ladder. Monday, I started as I often do, in the pool. I went 2,200 yards. On the road, I shuffled 6.26 miles and in the gym I did bench pressing and corator tuff work.

Tuesday, I pulled off another triple swimming 1,400 yards, running 2.32 miles, and lifting again. Wednesday I did my third triple in as many day. At the pool. I got 2,250 yards. On the road I ran 4.64 tough miles. In the gym, I did trap bar deadlifts and trap work.

Thursday I wanted another triple, but I had too much preparation to do for my night class. I did not swim, but ambulated 1.81 miles and lifted weights. Friday I was tapering for Saturday's race and only ran 1.34 whiles swimming another 2,250 yards as well as lifting weights.

Saturday was the Sweet Potato Festival 5K. Forrest and I ran it. At home, I did legs and played with strongman stuff. Sunday, besides going to church and napping, I took a short shuffle of 1.32 miles.

For the week, I

swam 7,401 meters,
ran 21.2 miles, and
lifted weights six times.

That was as solid week while backing things down a bit. Now I will rebuild to a little over thirty miles again. The streak now stand at 35. Not bad for an old man.

The Vardeman Sweet Potato 5K

Saturday was the Sweet Potato Festival at Vardeman. If you have never been, do yourself a favor and mark you calendars for the first Saturday of November 2022. Penny and I have been going for several years now and grieved the COVID closure of 2020. We were eager to attend this time, and I always do their 5K. I especially like the race because it is so low key, simple, small. We line up, somebody says go, and we run. We run by the high school, we run down some nondescript streets, we run by a rural cemetery, we run back to the start huffing and puffing.

Then their are the vendors downtown. That's my wife's thing. She will shop and shop and shop. Usually, I find a booth selling local honey, make my purchase, then I am done. This year, I added some sweet potatoes to my shopping list. I bought a forty pound box for twenty bucks. Penny cooked some last night. They were good, yeah. They were extra good, heck yeah.

The race was nice. Forrest made the trip with us this time. Vicki Jee from Greenwood also showed up. So the delta trio took on the course. Forrest dropped Vicki and me early. For most of the race, I thought Vicki was ahead of me. Another woman there had on the same outfit, was about the same size, and had the same hair color. When it became obvious that I was not going to catch the women in red-- whom I thought was Vicki-- I became despondent. First my son, now an older woman who just started running.

Sigh.

I finished in 31:58, a 10:23 pace. I was fit to run faster, but I messed up my taper with a tough session on Money Road Wednesday. Overall, however, I ran a hard three miles with a little bit of climbing. A good training stimulus, no doubt. About Forrest beating me, I really did not grieve. He had a good race, ran a PR, did 27:something. I congratulated him on a good run. Vicki ran a PR and finished a little behind me. After the run, we found out that they were not doing awards. I did not mind, but I sincerely hope that this does not portend something more serious. Kosciusko dropped their 5K, and I really hated that. I loved running there, and it was Penny's and my favorite festival. Now Kosciusko has been supplanted by Vardeman.

Besides the vendors and the run, Vardemon has the best food of any outdoor gathering I have ever been to. They have all the food folks on one street and the smell alone is enough to make you howl at the moon. There are chicken dinners, funnel cakes, ice-cream, hot dogs, hamburgers, corndogs, Mexican, fish, bbq, and more and more and more. Forrest got a Philly cheese steak while Penny and I went bbq.

One vendor on the block and a half
of heaven in Vardeman

The terrible trio from Greenwood

We drove home happy. Penny got to shop. Forrest and I got to run. We all got to eat. What's not to like?

Down to Two

Thursday I did only two workouts, but that is OK. I ran for the 32nd day in a row. That is a new record for me. Yes, I still believe in rest and in the Sabbath. But I am in the early stages of training for something that is going to require the utmost of durability and fitness. I think a streak is part of the program to get me there. My easy days are still very easy giving me rest, active rest. Thursday was an easy day, and I shuffled a slow 1.81 miles.

At Plate City, Pee Wee chewed on stuff while I bench pressed

  15 X 50
  10 X 72
  17 X 100
  14 X 110
  12 X 120
  9 X 130

I also did two set of seated dips and some corator tuff stuff. I wanted to swim, but I have the night class, and I needed to study. The semester is almost over. Wow. Time flies. Soon I will be out to train like a madman. Thank you, Jesus.

Three for Three

I made it three for three Wednesday going three workouts per day for three days in a row. If memory servers me correctly, that is the first time I have pulled that off this semester. This school term has been unusually time consuming.

I started with a run. BK was out with a conference or something. So Mary Peyton and I were supposed to race, but she backed out. That left me alone with the rain. I went out and parked on Wade Road so I could do an interval workout on Money Road without the hassle of side streets and crossing traffic. It was a tough one that I hope will pay off Saturday when Penny, Forrest, and I go to Vardeman for the Sweet Potato Festival, and I race the 5K.

At the pool, I swam

  2,100
  brick kick
  50 easy
  25/25 breast/free
  50 back
  total: 2,250 yards = 2,056 meters.

Since I am racing Saturday, I did not want to put in a heavy leg workout, but I did want to hit the gym. So I did low volume deadlifting with some yoke work. By yoke work, I mean trapezius muscles. I did two reps of standard deadlifts at 135 pounds and then went to the trap bar deadlift with shrugs at the top. I pulled

  1 X 170
  1 X 190
  1 X 210
  1 X 220
  1 X 225

I feel like this is valuable work, holding that kind of weight. One thing weight training does is strengthen the bones. The heavier I go, the stronger my legs bones should be. Why is that important? It is important because on day two of the Great Geezer Run I began to develop a stress fracture. I have had several of those. I am training for something really big sixteen or seventeen months in the future. My body will have to be as strong and durable as possible everywhere if I am to have a chance to succeed.

Writing

Writing is one of my hobbies. This blog gives me an outlet, a venue, and way to express myself and write often enough to get better. I think. After years of teaching writing, I have concluded that there are twenty ways to get better at the sport activity. Here is the list:

  1. Writing

  2. Writing

  3. Writing

  4. Re-writing

  5. Re-writing

  6. Reading

  7. Reading some more

  8. Reading good writers

  9. Talking about writing

  10. Writing

  11. Thinking about writing

  12. Reading

  13. Writing

  14. Re-writing

  15. Writing narratives

  16. Writing fiction

  17. Writing arguments

  18. Writing persuasive essays

  19. Writing favorite memories

  20. Reading

See? Writing is a skill and a skill is something one gets better at by doing it. Slowly the writer learns her craft by composing sentences day after day. The subject is not important. What is important is that the writer writes, writes often, and re-writes the writing to make it better.

Putting thoughts onto paper is not easy for some people. For many years, I was one of those persons. I always wrote well, but for me when I was in college, writing papers was the biggest stress in life. Even when I knew what I wanted to say, putting the words on paper was a slow and arduous process. I felt like a licked salt shaker: the words only dribbled out one at a time while I tried to shake them out of my mind.

Also important is to learn some of the techniques that good writers use. In English Composition I, we read Ricky Bragg's All over but the Shoutin'. The reason for this text is that Bragg offers an excellent example of good writing in almost every sentence of his work. Once I had read Bragg enough to recognize his techniques, I began to see those same techniques in every published writer I read.

What are those techniques, you ask? A few of them are the series of three, an almost ubiquitous use of metaphors (especially the simile), variety of sentence types and lengths, added detail, images, characterization, alliteration, effective use of planned repetition, and others, many many others.

Once I began to categorize Bragg's techniques and see them in other writers, I then began to use them myself. For example, the series of three is something I have never written in a first draft. Two is natural for me, but now instead of changing it in the revising process, I catch it while I am drafting. If I write a series of two, such as in the sentence, "I had a good day of training with running and swimming." I will immediately revise to "I had a good day of training with running, swimming, and proper nutrition." Test if for yourself. Which sentence do you think is more pleasing?

The previous paragraph (see what I did there) mentioned revision. I often accuse my students of have Larry the Cable Guy Syndrome. They just want to throw a few works on paper, hit Print, and turn it in. In short, they want to "Get 'er done" the fastest and easiest way possible. Good writers, however, do not have Larry the Cable Guy Syndrome. To them, their writing represents them, their intellect, their ability, their pride. Slowly, I have developed the habit and the pride to go back and rework my writing to make it better. Believe me, it's worth the effort.

Another Three

By the grace of God, I did it again. Tuesday, being one of my long days, I managed to pull off another triple. I started with a trip to the pool and a short 1,400 yard swim. That is the key word and concept for Tuesdays, short. After that, I went home and did a short 2.32 mile run past Hades. I have taken to thinking about the gravel road at the end of East Claiborne as Hades. Since Penny and I moved to the Hideout in May of 2020, I have run out there at least once per week ever since. I like running out there, especially when I am tired, because I am along and not one can see my pitiful stride. A tree service dumps logs and branches out there and burns them. There has been an ongoing fire there for almost two years that I know of. Really, even after big rains if there are no flames visible, there is smoke. Depending on the wind direction, the smoke can ruin a run.

Please stop.

The wind was from the right direction os I made my little shuffle and went home where I got my gym stuff together and watched some election coverage. Since I don't talk politics, I will stop there. At Plate City, I hung out with Pee Wee. He is really feeling good since his two day stay at the hospital. Since it was pull night, on the chest-supported row machine, I did

  15 X 40
  10X 65
  10 X 70
  8 X 75
  8 X 80
  9 X 75
  11 X 70
  11 X 65

I did some other stuff, but that was the gist of it. So I am right proud of myself for getting three workouts two days in a row. Also, it was the 30th day of the streak. I am not certain, but I'm pretty sure that is a PR. Thank you Jesus.

Mystery Solved?

I think I figured out what happened to me Friday. If that sentence confuses you, read "What a Peetiful Day" posted last Saturday on this blog. Heat training has definite effects on the body. One of these effects is that the body stores more water, much of it in the blood, because that is where sweat comes from. Eventually, when the weather cools, these heat adaptations disappear. I am theorizing that since my body has gone through this heat adaptation and heat de-training cycle so many times that running in Friday's 50 degree weather signaled to my body that is was time to dump the excess water.

That's the explanation I gave to my sister, who is a retired nurse practitioner and my go-to person for medical advice. She agreed that possibly that was the cause, and that I do not need to "result a physikan," Charlie Turner, but to let her know if it happens again.

Monday I was back on track (on the road actually). The streak hit 29 days while I knocked off 6.26 miles on the road. Why so many? This is race week when we travel to Vardeman for the Sweet Potato Festival 5K where I hope to win my age group. I will taper at the end of the week and not have the Friday long run, but I still want to get in at least 20 miles. It's always a juggling act. Besides the road work, I swam

2,050
brick kick
50 easy
25/25 breast/free
50 back
total: 2,200 yards = 2,010 meters.

Then I went to Plate City and hung out with Pee Wee. While spending time with my friend, I benched

  12 X 50
  8 X 72
  6 X 105
  3 X 130
  3 X 140
  3 X 140
  3 X 140
  8 X 120

That was a pretty decent day. Pee Wee was happy and so was I. Thank you Jesus.

HOD 14

It was a good week, yeah. I started by swimming 2,000 yards, running 5.44 miles, and lifting weights Monday. Not bad.

Tuesday I continued with a 1,350 yard swim, 2.04 mile run, and some more weight work at the gym.

Wednesday was the match race with Mary Payton. Despite the fact that I dropped my time by minutes, at the turn around she was closer than ever. She is truly frightening. I swam 2,100 yards but gave in to laziness and did not lift.

Thursday, I shuffled an easy 2.26 mile and lifted some weights. With my night class, I did not feel like making the crammed effort of getting in a swim.

Friday was all about spending time on the feet. I ran and walked (and peed) 15.85 miles. The breakdown was 12.0 running and 3.85 walking.

Saturday I did a short 1,200 at the pool. I wanted to watch football. I also hit the road for 2.27 miles. and hit the weights for pull on upper body and squats on lower body.

Sunday I did a simple 1.63  miles before going to John's Halloween party. It was nice as Igor crawled into my lap and stayed there for a good thirty or forty minutes. When Penny wanted to leave, I had to make Igor move and he fussed.

For the week, I

swam 6,073 meters,
lifted weights five times, and
ran 30.09 miles.

Hey, that's pretty good running miles right there, pretty good. Thank you, Jesus.
