Back on Track

Wednesday I got back on track with all three workouts. First, I swam a simple 4,600 yards straight in 1:30:02 at a 1:57 pace. I have shortened my swims since I pushed Chicot back until the fall. The day off and the stretching did the trick on the tendon and the shoulder felt fine.

After swimming, I did my little shuffle of 2.86 miles. The weather was gorgeous. Besides the sunshine, a north wind was bringing in a chill and dry air that made it feel like late October. I caught myself listening for the Greenwood High School band to fire up preparing for the football game. Yes, the weather carried me back that far, to early 1970s on Fridays in October when we could hear the band before we ever headed to Bulldog Stadium to watch the game.

After my shuffle, I went to Plate City for legs. This is when I kept an ear turned south listening for the big drums of the band. I never post my leg weights because they are so light that it is that embarrassing. I did four sets of squats, one set of leg presses, and one set of kettlebell swings. Of course I did rotator work, but I backed off a little on that trying to give my shoulders a bit more rest.

It was a nice day. Thank you, Jesus, for good health and for that weather that brought back fond memories of bygone times.

Two out of Three

When I awoke Tuesday morning, I knew something was wrong. My shoulders were tight, both of them, but the left one was mega tight. I could feel the biceps tendons where they join the upper humerus and there was nothing funny about it. It was not pain, but an unpleasant sensation that I knew was not good. I stretched only to be greeted by soreness and mild pain. I knew why. I have been doing big yardage in the pool and moving tons of weight in the gym. I had pushed things a little too hard. Monday, I increased both volume and intensity on the bench. That's a no no, one of those rules of thumb that exists for a reason. As I have aged, I have learned them all, the rules of thumb, the hard way.

I spent a lot of time that morning working and then tried to get in a run before lunch. I drove to Wade Road. Sometimes I don't want to be seen shuffling around town like an old man. I ran the loop. Before I left the truck, I took my house key off my key ring and put it in my Fuel Belt like I always do. Did you catch it? I took my house key off not my truck key. Yeah, I locked myself out of the truck. Lovely. And I didn't even carry my phone. Who moves even ten feet in their house without their phone? I was in a hurry. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

So I had to walk home, during lunch, from Money Road. Why didn't I run? I already had done all I had planned. Already sporting a sore shoulder, I was not about to vote for a matching sore knee. I got home, ate, and Penny took me out there to get the truck.

No I did not. Swim. I thought, better sorry than safe. Is that how that goes? Maybe lots of stretching and a day off will do the trick. But if I swim, it might be the start of some real trouble, and I know from experience that shoulder trouble can last a long, long time. When my right arm fell off, it took eighteen months for it to grow back. Eighteen months!

At Plate City, it was pull day, the opposite of the push that the biceps tendons are impacted by. I know what you are thinking. Most people do biceps and back on the same day because pulling at least indirectly uses the biceps. True. But the key is indirectly. The bench press, while not calling on the biceps as a prime mover, puts a huge stress on the biceps tendon. If you don't believe it, thank God Almighty that you never had to learn that the hard way.

On the one-armed bent row, I did

21 X 40
15 X 50
10 X 60
  7 X 65
  7 X 65
  6 X 65

Bent barbell rows 12 X 75

I also did four sets of Swim Pulls:

17 X 50
13 X 55
10 X 60
5 X 61.5

Face pulls

18 X 27
13 X 37
11 X 38
  5 X 39

So I got two out of three. I did hate not to swim, but age has taught me to have some restraint. Some restraint. Sometimes. My goal for a 22/22 week is probably gone. But better to reduce a little a stay healthy. Thank you, Jesus.

Build Up, Countdown

Monday started build week two. It also started the countdown to the end of the semester. I worked pretty hard for a few hours before putting my shoes on and heading outdoors. I didn't want to drive the whole six miles to Malmaison Road so instead I shuffled around town. I decided on the loop around the river: the Keesler bridge, River Road, the river bridge. After I crossed the river, I changed plans and headed south on Cotton Street to make my way to the Spike Trail Park. That is a nice trail. I ran it west to one block short of the highway, then to the hospital track, over the bridge, and around the neighborhood until I amassed 4.55 miles. Job done.

After lunch and at the pool, I swam

2,450 47:45
1,150 tt 19:10 (new Association of Sports Swimmers world record)
600 medium paddles 11:10
200 back 4:46
total: 4,400 yards = 4,021 meters.

I mowed the lawn and then did bench presses. I pushed

  18 X 95
10 X 120
  7 X 140
  5 X 145
  3 X 150
  3 X 155
10 X 120

I was definitely stronger than last week. It's amazing. Once I start pushing 140 pounds, I always get stronger. I am thinking about on my next buildup to stop at 140 and add sets and reps and assistance exercises and see how that goes. I did a set of overhead dumbbell presses, a set of Swim Pulls, facepulls, and triceps push downs.

A solid day that beats the heck out of Randy Beets furtive swimming. I want the virtual meets to resume now. The COVID-19 thing has even stopped that. Wow.

Thank you, Jesus, for a good day. Protect our health care workers in body, mind, and soul. Drive this scourge from our land, and may we be stronger, more healthy, and more trusting in You as a result.

4/20 - 4/26

I sometimes mention a 20/20 week. That is a training cycle where I swim 20,000 meters and run 20 miles within the same seven days. Last week, I hit a 21/21 week. It's a big deal. It beats the heck out of what Randy Beets is doing. My goal for this week is a 22/22. We'll see.

Monday I ran 4.3 miles to get started right. I swam 3,793 meters and lifted a whole bunch of weights at Plate City. Tuesday I shuffled 2.85, swam 3,747, and lifted some more.

Wednesday things broke down a little. I still ran (2.9) and swam (4,181), but I had an appointment in Carroll County and could not lift. Thursday, however, found me at least doing squats in the gym and shuffling 3.15 miles on Malmaison Road and swimming 4,387 meters in the cold pool.

Saturday I purposely slowed things down to no running and only 1,462 meters of swimming. I did want to lift, but two land showings in the hills knocked that out like a Roberto Duran punch hitting a hapless jaw.

For the week, I

ran 21.21 miles,
swam 21,591 meters, and
lifted weights four times.

That was good training. I hope to do a little more this week. With my key events out there somewhere at an unknown future date, I have begun wave training with the idea of staying fit while being able to peak within weeks of an announced date. I will build for three weeks, have a recovery week, and then rebuild. That is the best idea I could come up with under these circumstances. The recovery weeks are helpful and are normally radical for the week of the event. A taper is what I am talking about. However, I don't want to taper for nothing. A rest week, a cycle of reduced but still significant training, I hope will fit the bill.

Thank you, Jesus, for giving me hope at a time when a lot of people are at wits end. May our world return to normal but with a renewed faith in You.

Slim Saturday

Friday's massive training was followed by a slim Saturday, in part by design in part by necessity. At the beginning of the week, I had certain training goals and I determined not to exceed those. With both Chicot and the Senior Olympics being postponed, I am in the strange position of not knowing how much to train. So I am sort of in a holding pattern. With the running, I just want to stay healthy and the memory of the knee flareup is still fresh. With the swimming, I can peak for Chicot or the pool meet in three weeks, or at least I think I can. So I am trying to stay in shape and work on small things. My swim goal for this week was 21,000 meters. I only needed a 1,000 meters Saturday to make that so that is what I did.

1,200
3 X 50 r 1:00
 1 - 43
 2 - 39
 3 - 38
200 back
total: 1,600 yards = 1,462 meters

Notice the 50s. Those might not be good times, but for me they are OK. Last year while peaking for the SO, the fastest pool time I swam for 50 was 39. Of course this is pushing off the wall instead of a dive start and this is self timed which takes about two seconds. Also, I am swimming alone which is much slower than racing someone. But still, Saturday I tied my and beat my best from a year ago when I was working the sprints every single pool practice. And this happened the day after that Density bench press training. I'm not swimming the 50 this year, but a faster 50 means a faster 100, which I am swimming.

I did not run. That was by choice. I had a goal of 21 miles, had made that Friday, and I know that running six days a week is a bit risky. So I marked my daily shuffle off the agenda.

I did not lift. That was not by design. I had two appointments to show the land and that took up the rest of the afternoon. I hate to miss my workout, but life happens and this needed to be done. I could have risen early in the morning and gotten it all done. But sometimes sleeping in is a good thing. I get pretty irritable when I become overly fatigued. My wife doesn't deserve that.

Thank you, Jesus, for a good day.

Massive Friday

Friday I hit it hard on all three. I guess Randy Beets just gave up. He should have. I started by going to the pool before lunch. The water is down to 78, the same as a competition pool. I like swimming that temperature, but I don't like getting in at that temp. Four more days is what Debbie tells us. I am afraid now that I am becoming so acclimated to this cooler water that when they get it fixed, it's going to be too hot. I swam

4,400 straight in 1:21:02 @ 1:50 per 100 yards with an average heart rate of 111.

I could have gone farther, but that was a good workout and I wanted to save some energy for the afternoon.

After lunch I went out for a seven-mile shuffle. I kept doing little out and backs on the turn rows out on Wade Road. When I got onto Money Road, I realized that I could get 7.8 and hit 21 for the week. Then you know what happened. Two tenths short of the next mile won't work. I did turn arounds and brought it up to eight miles.

That left me pretty flogged. I rested a little, took some nutrition, and went to Plate City where I did some Density training. What is that? you ask. You do a particular exercise with a predetermined rep/weight scheme for a set time. Then you have a baseline to beat the next time out. I saw it on a video by Josh Bryant who programs for some big names. He is Julius Maddox's coach. Who is that? Maddox recently broke the all-time raw bench press world record at 770 pounds. Bryant also programs for Brian Shaw the American strongman competitor who is the four time World's Strongest Man. So the guy knows what he is doing and some of the strongest men in the world look to him to program their training.

I did this Density work on the bench press. In this protocol, you take a weight that is your ten rep max, and do it in sets of no more than five reps. The goal is to get to forty reps as soon as possible. Rest as needed. I did

8 X 95 for a warm up, then

5 X 120
5 X 120
5 X 120
5 X 120
5 X 120
5 X 120
5 X 120
5 X 120

I did the workout in 10:45. Now I have a baseline. I will try to either beat the time, or add weight, or add some reps or two of the three or all three the next time I do this workout. Thus the name "density." You do more and more work in a set period of time, hence the workout becomes more dense.

I liked this. But about thirty minutes later, my pectorals and triceps were aching. I should have done a back off set or two to flush some blood through them. Next time I will.

So I went over 20,000 meters in the pool and cracked 21 miles on the road. Not only that, but I did something new in the gym and I liked it. That makes for one good day. Penny cooked us some steaks on the grill, thus the day was not just good, but very good. Thank you, Jesus.

Thorsday

Once more, I drove out Malmaison Road and took a run. I shuffled a short 3.15 miles then went straight home and did squats. I usually wait until late afternoon to workout, but I missed Wednesday's gym session (legs) due to rain, and I thought I might have to miss today's.

At the pool, which was still cold, I swam

975 19:47
brick kick
1,050 20:06
brick kick
1,025 19:31
9 X 150 as
  1 first 50 fast 2:33
  2 second 50 fast 2:31
  3 third 50 fast 2:31
  4 first and last 25 fast 2:31
  5 first 75 fast 2:31
  6 second 75 fast 2:31
7 first 25 fast and alternating fast and easy 2:27
8 second 25 fast and alternating easy and fast 2:27
9 I forgot what I did. All fast? 2:27 (I remember now: first and third 50 fast)
300 medium paddles 5:36
100 back 2:22
total: 4,800 yards = 4,387 meters

I had a showing of the final forty acres we own in Carroll County so that knocked me out of my upper body lifting session. It was still a pretty solid day, better than a horse trough sit. Thank you, Jesus, and please heal our land, our world.

Truncated Day

After kicking butt and taking names for two days, God dealt up a truncated day for me Wednesday. I finished my school work early and I did run and swim. After that, the weather took over. First, I have been growing a little bored with running around town of late. Of course I shuffle out Wade Road a lot, but even that gets mundane at times. This is when I used to go to Hodge Ski Lodge and run there. We don't have the lodge anymore and this is where it hurts.

Then a memory hit. I used to sometimes ride out to Malmaison Road, park by that first old church on the right just off the highway, and do my thing up and down that road. It is country, it is gravel, and it is different. Why haven't I been out there in like five years? And it is only seven miles from my house.

So I drove out. You know what? I was wrong. It is only six miles from my wive's driveway. When I got out of the truck and started my slow and short shuffle, I was amazed that, like Money Road, you could be so close to town and so far into the county, the country, the farm and hunting territory that carries with it an ambiance, an experience just by being there.

I only did 2.9 miles. I am on the "be careful" highway after the knee flareup of a few weeks ago. Running on a gravel road adds a level of protection since the surface has more give than the ubiquitous asphalt of town. The air is clean, except when a truck passes. The spaces are wide, open, and wide open. I enjoyed myself and once more marveled at how I let this one go for so long.

Penny was out for lunch so I ate early, rested, and went to the pool. It is still cold. Sigh. I can take it. Poor John. I swam

3,300 1:02:12
200 tt 2:59
650 medium paddles 11:54
brick kick
275 5:19
150 back 3:29
total: 4,575 yards = 4,181 meters

I went home, took nutrition, and lounged until Penny got in from work. When she did, she had her umbrella out. Huh? Yeah, I looked out and it was raining. Not to worry, rain stops. But it didn't. So leg day became lounge night. I took a bath, hung out with Luvie, and watched YouTube videos. I saw some strongmen lifting and I watched Brothers in Blood, the real one. There are several films that use this title to get clicks, but I found the real one. This is a documentary about the most famous lions who ever lived, the Mapogos. These six lions conquered 160,000 acres in South Africa and held it for six years. The were the most dominant most violent most aggressive lions in history. Their story is educational, inspiring, and heart breaking. If you want to view it, go the my channel, EndangeredSwimmer on YouTube. Click Playlists, and then find Liked Videos. It is at the top of the list.

Thank you, Jesus, for another good day. Thank you for Malmaison Road. Thank you for the video on the Mapogo lions. Even they illustrate Your truth, the words of Jesus: Live by the sword, die by the sword.

After Kicking Butt

After a busy few hours of setting up work for my students, I slid on my running shoes and slipped outside while it was still a.m. I did my short shuffle, going 2.85 miles, to work the running muscles and to crosstrain for swimming.

Lunch with my bride was next. I picked us up a lunch at Greenwood Market Place. Then it was time for the pool. I had not swum long when Robert came in. I stopped and asked him about the status of the heater. "I just fixed it and turned it on. It should be heating now," he informed me. I put my hand over one of the vents. BINGO! It was blowing hot water.

I swam

2,400
15 X 50 @ 1:16
100 finger paddles
150 small paddles
200 medium paddles
250 large paddles
3 X 50 long paddles
100 back
total: 4,100 yards = 3,747 meters

I could feel some warmer spots in the pool as I trained. Then not so much. I checked the vent before I left. No hot water. I can take it, but John cannot. Poor guy. It's been weeks since he was in the water. First he was sick, then he could not contact his physician for permission, and now the heater.

Sigh.

At the gym it was pull day. One the one-armed bent row, I lifted

21 X 40
15 X 50
10 X 60
6 X 65
6 X 65
6 X 65

11 X 75 barbell bent row

Swim Pull

16 X 50
12 X 55
10 X 60

Facepulls

15 X 25
13 X 31
12 X 33.5
10 X 36

That's real training right there; I don't care who you are. It certainly is more than Randy Beets is doing. I do wish he could swim. I am sorry for all the swimmers who are locked out of their pools. I see it on Facebook everyday, swimmers whining, running, doing yoga, trying to stay in shape. One day this will all be over. Our world is strange right now. My faith and exercise are the constants in life that make things dependable. I am praying for those swimmers who can't do what they love. God bless you, and thank you, Jesus.

Taking Names

Monday I was kicking butt and taking names. Randy Beets? I don't know what he was doing because he didn't even make another one of those videos. At least he didn't post it. I started the day with work of course, but after that I shuffled out Wade Road for a total of 4.3 miles.

Post lunch it was to the pool, the 79 degree pool. The heater is broken again. When will it be fixed? That is not a bad temperature for me, but I admit, I do prefer it the old temp of 88. I'm not young anymore, and I never did like cold water hence Randy Beets horse trough videos. At the pool, I did the simple one. Remember last Tuesday? Of course you don't. Let me refresh your recall. I swam

2,400 46:02
1,100 tt 17:53 (1,050 in 17:02 - both Big ASS world records - take that Beets)
500 medium paddles 9:03
150 back 3:38
total: 4,150 yards = 3,793 meters

At Plate City, I continued to destroy Randy Beets. On the bench press, I did

  17 X 95
10 X 120
  7 X 140
  7 X 140
  4 X 145
  3 X 150
10 X 120

In addition to the all star bench pressing, I did a single set of Swim Pulls, three sets of triceps push downs, and face pulls. It was a day of butt kicking. Maybe Randy will get out of that tub one day and go swim a lake. Rules be darned. Sometimes civil disobedience is a patriotic duty. But he's a communist so that's not going to happen.

Thank you, Jesus.

Update on Chicot IX

This is a short message on the current state of the Chicot Challenge 2020.

4/13 - 4/19

Last week the numbers continued to mount in my training cycle while Randy Beets delusionaly thinks he's doing something sitting in a horse trough. Monday, I ran 4.13 miles, swam 3,313 meters, but did not lift. Tuesday, I ran 2,65 miles, swam 3,473 meters, and had an aggressive lifting session at Plate City. The three-a-days continued Wednesday with 3,884 in the pool, 2.83 on the road, and more iron moved at he gym.

Thursday, I kept it up while Randy Beets still sat in that horse trough. I shuffled 3.07 miles, stroked 4,067 meters, and had my third gym session of the week. Friday, I did my big run with 6.75 miles but a mere 2,467 in the pool. Yes, I hit the weights again. Saturday I cut the swimming all the way down to 3,016, shuffled a minimum 1.81, but hit the weights like I was mad at them.

For the week, I

swam 20,220 meters
ran 21.24 miles, and
lifted weights five times.

That was a good week, my first 20/20 in a while. It sure beats a horse trough. That was, however, a huge reduction in the swimming from the week before. Since Chicot is now five months away instead of five weeks, I think I will train the water in a wave fashion, that is short builds and cut backs. Three weeks up and one week down should allow me to develop endurance and speed while staying relatively fresh. I will have to recalculate my peak for the next lifting cycle, but for now I have a few weeks left on this one.

Thank you, Jesus, for continued health.

New Records

New Records
By Jay Unver

(Lehrton, Mississippi) Zane Hodge did it again. In one week, he set two new Big ASS Endurance world records shaming his chief rival Randy Beets who has been sitting in a horse trough.

Hodge began his latest record assault by setting a brand new Association of Sports Swimmers world record at 1,050 yards Tuesday the 14th of April. He went 17:06 and then proclaimed that he could swim faster if he had someone else in the pool. "I wanted to push beyond the standard 1,000 yard distance," Hodge explained after setting the distance's inaugural record. "I plan to up the distance by 50 yards per week over the upcoming weeks," Hodge went on the say. "And what is Randy Beets doing? He's sitting in a horse trough accusing me of being a communist."

The war of words has been pretty strong lately between the two star athletes.

Hodge went on to set a new deadlift record for the Association of Sports Strongmen Saturday the 18th of April. He first tied his own world record at 185 and then pulled the new record of 190. As he lowered the barbell, he had a smile on his face, and then he yelled out, "What's Randy Beets doing? Sitting in a horse trough!"

Saturday

Mostly I took it easy Saturday. I did a short shuffle, 1.81 miles. I did not want to go too far, just get my twenty in. Actually that put me at twenty-one miles for the week an increase of six miles over the week before.

Since I ate a late breakfast, I did not eat lunch but I did snack on a banana and a glass of milk before I went to the pool at 1:30. I swam

2,400 45:37
200 back 4:38
300 medium paddles 5:26
400 25/25 free/back 8:35
total: 2,700 yards = 2,467 meters

That was what I wanted, a short and easy swim to finish off a step down week. An odd thing happened though. During my warm up, at about 1,500 yards, I had a sinking spell. It was like someone pulled the plug on my energy machine. Maybe is was a blood sugar thing although I have never had fluctuating sugar levels before. I just know that I was getting a good bite on the water, pulling hard and enjoying it, and then it went south all at once.

I did not feel like lifting. I was still under the spell of the sinking spell that started in the pool. But I went to Plate City anyway. I did three sets of squats, six sets of lat pull downs, some Swim Pulls, and the following dead lift session:

3 X 135
2 X 155
1 X 165
1 X 175
1 X 185
1 X 190 a new Association of Sports Strongmen world record

In short, it was another Randy Beetsdown day. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

Flags

Woo hoooo!!! We have backstroke flags at the little pool at Twin Rivers. It only took months, some of that was my fault, some of that was nobody's fault. But we have them, and I am getting ready to defeat Randy Beets in a whole new stroke. Let me tell you about it.

It started more than a year ago. When I signed up for the Mississippi State Senior Olympics in 2019, I decided to do the maximum four swim events. This forced me to toe the line in two sprints. I am not a sprinter, but I thought having to train to race a 50 and a 100 could only make me a better, more rounded swimmer. It did. Or at least I think it did.

Fast forward to sign up time this year. The same thought process hit me. Why not do another, a different event and stretch myself further as an athlete. So I started doing some backstroke laps at the pool and although I am far from good at the back, it is my best bad stroke. So I signed up for the 100 back.

Then I contacted Debbie about getting some backstroke flags. That was February 12. I offered to acquire the flags and placed an order that month. Not understanding flags, I ordered one flag thinking I was getting a pack of flags. That caused my order to be stalled, emails between SwimOutlet and me to be exchanged, and finally my partial order was shipped.

Later, I did some figuring, then some procrastinating, then in early March I placed another order to get everything we needed. A day or two later, an email from SwimOutlet informed me that my order was being held up in Ohio until April 6. WHAT!?!?!? Yeah, the COVID-19 thing even hit my package. They wanted to know if I still wanted the order. I want the order, I want the order, I want the order, I tried to convince them. Let me be clear, this is not a knock on SwimOutlet. I love that company, but this COVID thing has everything crazy.

April 6 came and no email saying my order had been shipped. April the 7th came and went. Then the 9th, 10th, and 11th. I was getting antsie. Finally on April 12 I received an email saying my order had shipped. At last, I thought, we are getting somewhere.

The package arrived April the 15th. After swimming on the 16th, I went home, unpacked both boxes, and made sure we had everything we needed. Then I texted Debbie and told her I had the stuff. "What do you want me to do with it?" I asked.

"I'll send Robert right over," was her response. Robert, by the way, is the fix-anything-and-everything man at Twin Rivers.

Great, I thought. I need to mow the front lawn. I'll start that, and I will see Robert when he drives up. I mowed the whole front before I got that sinking feeling that maybe when she said, I'll send Robert right over, she meant right over to the pool. Dang. Can this get anymore screwed up?

I went to the pool Friday the 17th. I texted Debbie when I drove up. "I'm here." I went inside the poolhouse. There were people there, several people. I sent Debbie another text: "I'm leaving."

To make a short story long, I did some stuff and then came back to the pool. It was empty. I waded in and Robert walked through the door. "What's up?" I asked. "You want to put up some backstroke flags?"

"That's the idea," he answered.

I went to my truck and got the stuff. I laid it out and showed Robert what needed to be done.

"We can handle this," he told me. "You swim."

Cha ching!!! I love this guy.

So I swam while Robert and one of the other guys worked on the flags. Then they got one side up. I stopped. "Looks good," I exulted giving them the thumbs up.

I swam some more and they finished the second row of flags. I did some backstroke, swam under the flags both ways and flipped. Yee haaa. We have backstroke flags and those things are beautiful. Now I am going to whip Randy Beets in another stroke. Thank you, Debbie. Thank you, Robert. Thank you, Jesus.

Back to Colder Water

I ran first, late morning and in shorts. It was just warm enough, 68, for me to lose the tights. Wait a minute, you say. I can go shorts a lot colder than that. Yes, but don't. Don't run in shorts if the outdoor temp is 65 or colder. Don't. You have been warned.

I went zigged around town, shuffled out Wade Road, went down that gravel one, and sauntered back towards home on Money Road. I did 6.75 miles and felt OK doing it. The knee didn't even whimper. So I am now back to some real running, slowly rebuilding for the Viking Half Marathon which has been rescheduled for August 22.

I had some errands to run so I was late getting to the pool. There were kids in there. Kids are not supposed to be in the little pool. I left and came back later. I swam

1275
550
25
250 tt 2:59
450 medium paddles 4:47
200 backstroke
total: 2,700 yards = 2,467 meters

It was bench day at Plate City. I pressed

17 X 95
13 X 100
13 X 100 plus one chain
10 X 100 plus two chains
7 X 100 plus two chains and a five hung on each side with bands

Facepulls

10 X 22
10 X 32
10 X 34.5
10 X 35.5

Another strong day while Randy Beets sits away in his horse trough. Thank you, Jesus.

Back to Cold Water

Thorsday was a big one. I worked on registration first, calling all the students on my list who did not have a non-payment hold. At the end of the spring semester, I usually joke to my co-workers that I am going into the Witness Protection Program. I think these students are in it. I sent them all two emails to their school email accounts. Then I sent them another email to their non-student email address (over several days). After that, I called. If I could tell that the number was a cell phone, I texted. I got a whopping two responses, neither of which wanted a schedule.

After stressing myself out over that, I hit the road for a shuffle. I went 3.07 miles, still in tights but it was warmer than Wednesday. I think spring is on the way. I hope.

At the pool, it was cold. Debbie texted in the morning that the heater was broken again. I had noticed Wednesday that the water felt 83. She told me it was actually 82 Wednesday. I was once so good at gauging water temps that if I and the thermometer did not say the same thing, I was sure you needed a new thermometer. Now I swim warm water every day that I don't measure. I developed that rusty skill swimming the fish ponds each year starting in February. As the season turned into spring, the water temps would vary wildly going up and down like a yo yo. I would set my thermometer out, swim, guess what the temp was, and then check it. I became so confident in my ability to get it right, that one day I and the thermometer disagreed by one degree. I was sure the instrument was wrong. I waited a few minutes and re-checked it. The thermometer had changed to what I said the water temp was. Really, I was that good.

I swam

2,350 45:33
200 tt 3:04
100 back 2:28
1,000 medium paddles 18:25
150 tt 2:14
650 small paddles 12:34
total: 4,450 yards = 4,067 meters

At the gym, it was another one of those odd days. I did pulls and legs on Wednesday so nothing was due to be worked. So I mowed the lawn, started cleaning out an outbuilding, and lifted some anyway. I did rotators, shoulders, and biceps. On the facepull, I did

22 X 22
15 X 32
10 X 33
8 X 34

I also performed on set of Swim Pulls, five sets of lateral raises, and many sets of rotator work. It was a full and semi-productive day. Thank you, Jesus.

Wednesday

All three again. At the pool, I swam

2,300
12 X 100 @ 1:53
550 medium paddles 10:11
200 back 4:47
total: 4,250 yards = 3,884 meters

Not bad. If you haven't noticed, I'm taking it easy this week. At least easier. I guess you could call this a step back week, sort of like a de-load in weight training. Just guessing, if the senior Olympics meet is re-scheduled, it will be in September. That is when I have re-set the Chicot. Same date I am sure. How do I know? What else could it be?

On the road, I shuffled 2.83 miles in tights. I haven't looked forward to the heat the way I usually do, but I am beginning to. This cold has got to go. I want to swim outdoors. I don't know what the water temps are in the pool and ponds, but my guess is 58. I don't do 50s. Heck, I don't even do 60s anymore. The number that would draw me out is 75. I just don't want to deal with anything colder than that.

At Plate City, I pulled and worked the legs a bit. On the one-armed bent row, I did

21 X 40
15 X 50
10 X 60
  5 X 65
  5 X 65
  5 X 65

On the Swim Pull, it was

15 X 50 (a cheap carabiner I was using broke sending the attachment crashing into my legs)
11 X 52.5
10 X 55

facepulls

20 X 22
16 X 28
13 X 30.5
10 X 33
  8 X 34

I also did some squats to round out my weight session. Plate City is popping, and I have plans for it for the future. The world's best backyard gym is going to be even better. At this time, I am not free to divulge what I have in mind, but stay tuned to this channel and I will tell you in good time.

It was a solid day of work and workouts. Thank you, Jesus.

All Three

I got them all Tuesday, all three workouts. First, I worked all morning on the computer doing school stuff. I'll probably do the same today. Then I went to the pool and swam

2,250 43:45
1,050 tt 17:06
500 medium paddles 9:11
total: 3,800 yards = 3,473 meters

How is that for simplicity? The 1,050 is a new Association of Sports Swimmers world record. Randy is still sitting in a horse trough. We competed in the 1,000 once, but I have never swum hard beyond that distance save for the time I did a one hour postal swim three or five years ago. Maybe it was seven. It's been on my mind for several weeks, to swim 50 yards over 1,000 for time. I just finally pulled the trigger on it. Now I am dreaming of working the distance up by 50 yards each time I repeat a version of that practice. I say a version because I will work my up warm up set also. That is an endurance/stamina practice. It hurt but it hurt good. I hated it and kind of liked it. I want more.

On the road, I shuffled 2.65 miles. It was still cool enough to need my tights. One day next month it will warm up. I am wanting to swim outdoors. Despite the fact that I have noticed for more than a decade that springs are getting colder, Facebook keeps bringing up Memories of me swimming in the fish ponds already three and five years ago. Is it that much colder now or am I just a sissy?

After taking Monday off, I went to Plate City. The plan was to do both push and pull. I only did push. On the bench, I pressed

16 X 96
9 X 120
7 X 140
7 X 140
4 X 145
4 X 145
9 X 120

I am in a bit of a quandary here. I had planned to peak the Monday before the swim meet and then taper towards Chicot. With the meet postponed until whenever and Chicot's date still in the air, what to do? That, I suppose, is the place we all find ourselves in this strange time: what to do? We are having to feel our way through it like a confused man going though a factory in the dark.

I did one set of Swim Pulls, tons of rotator work, and on the facepull, I got

20 X 20
16 X 26
12 X 21
10 X 33.5

And Randy Beets is sitting in a horse trough.

Thank you, Jesus.

Down One

Monday, I had a couple of appointments both of which fell through. That is one thing I have come to hate in life: waiting on someone. If you will wait, that is all you will do. I have been waiting for eleven years for eight electricians to come to my house. I have been waiting for 30 years for a certain woman to call and apologize to me. I have been waiting for forty-two years for my wife to be wrong about something, anything. When you schedule your day around someone else's promise, it always turns out bad for me. I know things happen, but why do they always happen when I am involved? Enough of my rant. Yes, I feel better. Wait, no I don't. It doesn't matter does it because you don't care and couldn't do anything about it if you did.

I ran in the morning to get something done. It was cool enough that I put my leggings on. It always gets cold just before of just after Easter. Like you didn't know that. This time it was both before and after. This time it is supposed to stay cold most of the week. We have two straight nights, beginning today, where the temps are predicted to go into the 30s. Then we have a 40s on tap. Then I hope it warms up. Springs are much colder than they used to be.

For decades I ran the 10K at Kosciusko the last Saturday of April each year. The fire department always had a water spray for the runners to run through. We needed it. But over the past ten years, everyone ran around it because it was too cool. Last year they dropped the water spray. Springs are colder then they used to be. The cotton planting time has even shifted by two weeks because it is too cold to plant cotton on April the 15th now, the date all the farmers used to shoot for. You don't care do you. In fact, you never even noticed. But you are talking weather not climate, you protest. I am talking forty years of weather. That is climate. The climate has changed and it has grown colder.

I shuffled out Wade Road for a total of 4.13 miles. And I was cold for much of the run. That's because springs are colder than they used to be. You didn't notice did you?

After lunch, I went to the pool and swam

2,200 42:35
10 X 50 @ 1:16
400 medium paddles 7:36
brick kick
325 6:32
100 large paddles
100 long paddles
total: 3,625 yards = 3,313 meters

When I came home, Penny and I decided to go for a ride. When we got back from the ride, I was too tired to go to the gym. Riding wore me out. I went to sleep at 5:30 p.m. I got up after my nap, ate supper, and went back to bed. Was it the riding, the waiting, or the cold weather that ground me down?

So I was down one, down one workout. That is OK. It was still a good day. Thank you, Jesus.

4/6 - 4/12

Another big training week is in the bank. The fact that I don't have any dates pinned down has not ameliorated my fervor to train. You never know when something is going to pop up. As Bill Clay often say, "Don't get ready. Stay ready." Sounds like good advice to me.

Monday I swam 3,300 yards or 3,016 meters and shuffled 2.35 miles. At the gym, I did the rotator and shoulder prehab stuff because I was not ready for one of my push or pull workouts.

Tuesday I was ready. But first I swam 9,200 yards in a straight swim. That took 2:52:05 @ 1:57. Later I shuffled 2.52 miles and then I hit it big at the gym doing pushes.

Wednesday the water numbers were 4,500 and the road numbers were 2.61. The gym was a place of struggling with big weights doing pulls and legs. Thursday I swam 5,025 yards, ran 2.66 miles, and did another big bout of shoulder prehab.

Friday was my lazy day. I swam a mere 3,625 yards and did lots of lounging for the rest of the day. Saturday, however, I swam a smaller 2,750 yards, but busted out 5.71 miles on the road. The knee is back. If I can just resist getting crazy on it, I can now run. At Plate City, I hit the legs plus heavy rack pulls and some shoulder stuff.

For the week, I

swam 25,955 meters,
ran 15.71 miles, and
lifted weights five times.

The knee is back, the swimming is going well, and I am still finding some PRs under the bar. I am now at 335,018 meters (208 miles) in the water for 2020. Life is good. Thank you, Jesus.

Yoke Squats

Saturday started with a sleep in and then a trip to the pool. I had already met my quota for the week, so I took it mostly easy and swam

2,150 42:41
200 tt 2:57
250 medium paddles 4:36
50 back :58
100 large paddles
total: 2,750 yards = 2,513 meters

I went home, ate some leftover catfish, and took a nap with River. Then I took a short shuffle. Actually, it was my longest of the week. I went out Wade Road and back for 5.71 miles.

I took more nutrition and hit Plate City for some different stuff. I did lots of rotator work, of course, and did heavy rack pulls at

5 X 135
6 X 185
3 X 205
1 X 215
1 X 220
1 X 225
1 X 230
1 X 235 (new Association of Sports Strongmen world record)

I did a set of squats and then moved to the yoke squat for

5 X 180
3 X 220
3 X 273
1 X 278 (new Association of Sports Strongmen world record)

That was a pretty good day. I wanted to do some farmer's carries but I was done after that. Another three-workout day and two world records to further humiliate Randy Beets. Take that, Big Guy.

Thank you, Jesus, and happy and holy Easter to all.

Less Is More

I'm learning that sometimes less is more. Friday I did more or less. See what I did there? I did less Friday, less in the pool, less on the road, but maybe not less in the gym.

At the pool, I swam

2,100 43:14
9 X 50 @ 1:16
650 medium paddles 12:23
25
brick kick
400 small paddles 8:02
total: 3,625 yards = 3,313 meters

That was quite a cutback but I needed it. While I was still in the pool, I decided not to run, just get a little more rest. It was a good decision. Then at Plate City I worked pretty hard. On the bench, I busted it hard for

  10 X 95
10 X 100
10 X 105
10 X 110
10 X 115
10 X 120
  8 X 125

I also did five sets of lat pull downs, two sets of the Swim Pull, a bunch of rotator work, and four sets of the face pull. That was a pretty solid session to round out a day of rest. Also, that covered push and pull leaving me with legs alone for Saturday. I am thinking strongman stuff. It has been a while since I did farmer's carries and yoke squats. An alley workout would do a body good.

Another day of social distancing equals another day of physical fitness. Thank you, Jesus.

Thursday

I finally got out a little before lunch and took a shuffle. I worked pretty hard most of the morning. Then I went out for a 2.66 mile run in the sun. That was something, the sunshine. It has rained almost every day this entire year of 2020.

What do you think I did after lunch? Three guesses. No one.

Right.

I swam

2,000 38:39
8 X 50 @ 1:16
600 small paddles 11:15
500 tt 7:44
600 small paddles
brick kick
325 6:22
600 back 14:01
total: 5,025 yards = 4,592 meters

Of course I went to Plate City. Since my schedule was wacked because of doubling up yesterday, I did what I did Monday, rotators, shoulders, and biceps. On the dumbbell curl, I pulled

24 X 15
18 X 20
11 X 25
  8 X 30
  3 X 35

I did a bunch of lateral raises and two sets of the Swim Pull as 12 X 50 and 11 X 52.5. I also did some reverse flys and facepulls at

15 X 20
15 X 25
15 X 30
13 X 31

That was a pretty solid day and it certainly beats Randy Beets sitting in a horse trough fuming about me swimming. I really am sorry that he can't swim. Thank you, Jesus, that I still am able to do that. A lot of people all over America can't swim and can't go to their gym.

I am getting in pretty good swimming shape. That makes me sad that the senior olympics have been postponed. The language of their announcement slightly hinted that they might not reschedule. Also, with Chicot on the bubble, there is a monkey wrench in the machinery every where I turn. Thank, God, however, that I have these problems. Having these issues means I still have hope, hope that something is going to happen, to come off and give me an avenue of competition.

Chicot Update

In my last post about Chicot 2020, I stated that the swim would not be cancelled nor postponed. Now I am hedging on that a bit. The swim will not be cancelled. I am, however, considering postponing the annual fundraiser. Here's why.

Everything is off kilter. That was one of the very reasons I did not want to postpone. But I am behind on everything: T-shirt design, publicity, fundraising, crew planning, and other things. Calls to the Lake Chicot State Park have left the possibility of even having a pontoon boat in question. The park manager I have dealt with for the past few years, Ocie Hunter, has retired. Attempts to reach the new park manager have all been unsuccessful. Calls to the marina have revealed that they don't know if they will even launch their boat this summer. Yes, the swim can be done without a pontoon, but it is much nicer, easier, and safer with one.

Not only all of that, but my wife wants to postpone. There is a major reason for that which I am not free to divulge at this time. She is a very private person and does not want certain plans we have known to the world. Personally, I don't care, but she does.

The dates in play at this time are:

  June 6 (the original) plan
  September 19

What is wrong with all the months in between? The water gets very hot in late June, July, and August. Furthermore, Penny and I are going to be very busy during that time. That, by the way, is also a reason to hold it on its original schedule. If we get it done in June, then it is done, out of the way.

You dear friends who work the swim, God bless you and let me know your thoughts, please.

Medium Work, Medium Write

I split the difference Wednesday. At the pool, I swam

1,250
7 X 50 @ 1:16
1,250
7 X 50 @ 1:!6
1,300 (with 125 back)
total: 4,500 yards = 4,113 meters

That wasn't a bad practice, a little short, but not too bad. I had planned more, but I had received the news that the Mississippi State Senior Olympics had been postponed. That took a little wind out of my sails. I figured that until I know the date, I don't want to hit the speed button too hard too many times. In other words, I don't want to peak too early.

I shuffled 2.61 miles. The knee cut up on me a little bit. At the gym, I did legs and pulls. Despite some knee issues running, I was able to squat. I found that the key was to move slowly. Slow down, slow up. On the one-armed bent row, I pulled

21 X 40
15 X 50
10 X 50
  4 X 65
  4 X 65
  4 X 65

I also did one set of barbell rows, 10 X 75.

For my old favorite Swim Pull, I handled

11 X 50
10 X 60
6 X 61.5

On the high rack pull, I did

10 X 120
  5 X 135
  3 X 195
  3 X 200
3 X 205 (a new Association of Sports Strongmen world record)

Why have I been forgetting the high rack pull? That is one heck of an exercise. I also did some facepulls at

22 X 20
15 X 25
11 X 30

My squat numbers remain classified. It's just that way.

Thank you, Jesus.

A New Division in BAE

A New Division in Big ASS
By Jay Unver

(Lehrton, Mississippi) In a socially-distanced news conference at the Big ASS Training Center in downtown Lehrton, Mississippi, Dr. Timothy Nomann announced big changes at the Association. Nervous reporters speculated among themselves before Nomann took the podium that he was about to announce the results of the investigation into the Randy Beets/Zane Hodge feud. Not to be, however.

Instead, Nomann broke to the world the new Association of Sports Sitters, a new venue for conduction sitting competitions of various sorts. At first, the gaggle of reporters seemed nonplussed. But after playing a couple of Beets' Horse Trough Chats, the idea seemed to gain some traction in the thinking of the newspaper men and women in attendance.

"This will give Randy Beets a chance to win something," one reporter yelled from the back of the room.

"He will have some competition," Nomann responded. "Remember Bell from London, England? She vows to be a star in this Association and is eager to defeat Beets at every turn."
Annabel Lavers from England vows to
beat Beets at his own game.

"What about Hodge? Has he shown any interest?"

"He could not be reached for comment," Nomann answered.

"Why couldn't you reach him," someone else from the back shouted. "Was he just pouting?"

"I think he has entered the Witness Protection Program. That is what I've heard but I can't confirm it." At that, Nomann ended the press conference and asked attendees to clean their hands from the hand sanitizer dispenser mounted on the wall near the door.

Longer Work, Longer Write

I did more Tuesday starting in the pool and extending to everything else. In case you are wondering, yes, I am working. A lot. I spend the morning on school work, then go to the pool, run after that, and hit the gym last thing in the late afternoon. At the pool, I just swam. Yeah, one of those, a straight swim of 9,200 yards which comes out to 8,408 meters or 5.22 miles. See, taking it easy Monday paid off. The swim lasted 2:52:05. Yes, I thought about going a full three hours, but I did enough.

On the road I also did more. A little bit more. I shuffled for 2.52 miles. The knee now feels really good. One day this week I want to go around five miles. At the gym I busted it out big. I did push, and on the bench I pressed

16 X 95
8 X 120
7 X 140
6 X 140
6 X 140
4 X 145
8 X 120

I also overhead pressed dumbbells for

10 X 25
  6 X 30

I did a whole bunch of rotator cuff work and on the facepull I upped it to

21 X 26
12 X 28.5
10 X 29.5

That was a pretty solid day. I swam more, ran more, and lifted more. Consequently, I slept well, really well. Thank you, Jesus.

Short Work, Short Write

I did three, but everything was a little off. At the pool, I got my comeuppance for all the showing out I did last week. The 30,000 meters and the heavy lifting left me flat, energyless, and slow. Normally I glance at my watch from time to time coming off the wall. The watch always tells the truth. Each time I did Monday, I saw that my pace was slow and slowing. Yeah, usually I get faster after warming up. Not this time. I had to use the restroom after 2,750. Getting back in, I went a mere 550 yards before I tapped for the day. That's right, I stopped after only 3,300 yards.

On the road I was not much any better. I shuffled only 2.35 and considered that good. At Plate City, I knew from the pool that my upper body was not ready to lift. I could have forced through it. It was push day but I decided to save that for Tuesday thus giving those muscles another day of recovery. Instead, I worked rotator cuffs, biceps (which rarely get direct work), plus I did two set of Swim Pulls, and one set of facepulls. That wasn't much, but I listened to my body and worked accordingly.

Thank you, Jesus, for giving me the wisdom to have some restraint.

Monday, April 6, 2020

3/30 - 4/5

It was a big week, one of my largest ever in terms of swimming. Monday I shuffled 4.26 miles and swam 9,000 yards straight. Tuesday I shuffled 1.77 miles, swam 5,375 yards, and lifted weights.

Wednesday I ran 2.12 miles, swam a good 5,250 yards, and lifted at the best backyard gym in America. Thursday, I ran my longest since I re-injured my knee. I went for 5.21 miles, swam for 5,77.5 yards, and did a light lifting session.

Friday I took it easy swimming 5,625 yards but not running or lifting. Saturday, I did all three but not in large numbers. I shuffle 1.81 miles, swam a mere 2,525 yards, and lifted weights.

For the week, I

ran 15.17 miles,
lifted weight four times, and
swam 30,705 meters.

That's good training. Thank you, Jesus, for time, health, energy, and desire.
